Childhood cancer is a heartbreaking illness, but the Pediatric Oncology Support Team (POST) is there to offer healthy doses of hope, help, and healing to local children and their families. The agency provides resources to address the social, financial, and medical complications common in childhood cancer. POST walks with the families through every aspect of their cancer journey and serves as a much-needed support system through the experienced and compassionate staff. Based in West Palm Beach, but serving children from a six-county area, POST is headed by Dr. Barbara Abernathy, a bone marrow transplant survivor. It has a staff of four full-time and two part-time employees and two interns working with a $405,000 annual budget. Patients range in age from birth to 21. A third is being treated for leukemia, 15 percent for lymphoma, 15-20 percent for brain tumors, and the rest suffer from bone, soft tissue, and liver or kidney cancer. Over 1,700 children with cancer have been helped by POST over the past 18 years.
