Paws 4 Liberty saves dogs from animal shelters or rescue groups – and the dogs, in turn, save wounded veterans. It’s a formula that has worked wonders since the organization formed in 2006, as soldiers began returning from combat with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Since September 11, 2001, military conflicts have left 500,000 disabled veterans, with one in five being diagnosed with PTSD. With a primary focus on post 9/11 veterans, Paws 4 Liberty (P4L) screens and trains service dogs and match them with qualifying veterans free. The dogs learn skills that allow them to assist in medical and life-coping situations, and also help veterans deal with emotional overload. The organization also works with veterans who already have a dog and would like to learn skills that can help with PTSD symptoms. While some service dog organizations have their own breeding program, Paws 4 Liberty does not breed dogs. All P4L service dogs come from animal shelters or rescue groups or are donated to the organization
