A soldier deployed in Iraq in 2003 was frustrated, tired and longing for home. His plight resonated with Lynelle Chauncey Zelnar since he was the son of a coworker – and she decided to help. She began collecting items to send to the soldier and his squad members, an effort that gave birth to the Forgotten Soldiers Outreach program. Now tucked away in the warehouse district in Lake Worth, staff and volunteers are busy packing “We Care” boxes to ship overseas to members of the military. The boxes, which contain donated nonperishable items and toiletries, have benefited nearly a half-million service members. Up to 400 boxes are shipped each month. The program also recruits school children to write much-appreciated letters to the soldiers. Forgotten Soldiers Outreach holds several fundraisers throughout the year, some centered around Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Veterans Day. Until there are no more wars – a dream Lynelle shares – you’ll find staff and volunteers packing boxes every day for those who serve.
